The 23-time singles Major champion returns to action this week in Eastbourne, entering the doubles draw alongside world no. 3 Ons Jabeur. The American will compete for the first time in almost a year. She retired at the last year’s Wimbledon in the opening round and has stayed away from the court since then.

Serena is trying to raise her level ahead of the next week’s Wimbledon, entering the doubles draw in Eastbourne and hoping to play a couple of matches. Karolina Pliskova believes Serena will struggle to find her A-game at Wimbledon after a long break from competitive encounters.

Serena is preparing for her milestone 20th Wimbledon, claiming seven titles at the All England Club and losing four finals, the most recent ones in 2018 and 2019. Williams skipped Wimbledon in 1999, 2006 and 2017 due to injuries, and the tennis world expected the same ahead of this year’s edition. Serena Williams is returning after not playing for a year.

Instead, Serena decided to travel to England and give it a go at one of her favorite tournaments. Williams left Wimbledon in tears a year ago following a retirement against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opening round.

After not playing for a year, Serena is ready to test her skills again, still dreaming about that elusive 24th Major crown. The American veteran has recently struggled with injuries after playing well in 2018 and 2019 and reaching four Major finals.

She lost them all, and her last notable result at Majors came at the last year’s Australian Open. She advanced into the semi-final and lost to Naomi Osaka in straight sets. “I do not know how long it has been since Serena has played.

Has it been a year? It’s a long time, and she is not the youngest player on the Tour anymore. I suppose the body takes some time to get back into shape. Playing matches at tournaments is still very much different from just practicing, and from what I understand, she is not playing singles here in Eastbourne but only doubles.

I think it will be super difficult for Serena no matter which kind of player she is because this is a thing where you still need some time. But of course, she is an amazing player, she has achieved so much, and many players will be super scared to play her.

This is her advantage but let’s see the level. I can not much before she plays matches again,” Karolina Pliskova said.
